大学在学中にニューヨークへ留学し、映画制作を学ぶ。
映画情報番組のディレクターを経て、2007年に初長編『Wiz/Out』を渋谷ユーロスペースで劇場公開し、スマッシュヒットを記録。以降、国内外で監督・脚本家として精力的に活動。
函館港イルミナシオン映画祭シナリオ大賞にて、2009年『記憶代理人』（審査員奨励賞）、2011年『リアルファミリー』（グランプリ）と2年連続で受賞。2013年には釜山国際映画祭主催のAFA（Asian Film Academy）に、監督として選出される。
2017年の長編『リバースダイアリー』は、世界20以上の映画祭に正式招待され、ドイツ・SNOWDANCEインディペンデント映画祭グランプリを含む11冠を獲得。2023年には長編『消せない記憶』が全国劇場公開され、リッチモンド国際映画祭にて最優秀脚本賞を受賞。
2024年から2025年にかけては、自ら撮影を担う少人数体制で俊敏な制作スタイルを確立。短編映画『COLORable』『シネアスト』『再生』を連続して監督し、人物の内面に深く寄り添う詩情とリアリズムを融合させた作風で、新たな表現領域を切り拓いている。
While studying at university, Shin Sonoda studied filmmaking during a stay in New York. After working as a director for a movie information TV program, he released his debut feature film Wiz/Out at Eurospace Shibuya in 2007, which became a surprise hit. Since then, he has been actively working as a director and screenwriter in Japan and abroad.
He received consecutive awards at the Hakodate Harbor Illumination Film Festival’s Scenario Awards—Memory Agent (2009, Special Jury Award) and Real Family (2011, Grand Prize). In 2013, he was selected as a director for the Asian Film Academy (AFA), hosted by the Busan International Film Festival.
His 2017 feature film Reverse Diaries was officially invited to over 20 international film festivals and won 11 awards, including the Grand Prize at the Snowdance Independent Film Festival in Germany. In 2023, his feature film Indelible Memory was released theatrically across Japan and won Best Screenplay at the Richmond International Film Festival.
From 2024 to 2025, he established a nimble production style with a compact crew, handling cinematography himself. He directed three consecutive short films—COLORable, Cinéaste, and Playback—blending poetic sensitivity and realism to explore human emotions with depth, paving the way for a new artistic phase in his career.
